Managing Teacher Information with the TMIS Returns System in Kenya
In Kenya, the Teacher Management Information System (TMIS) plays a crucial role in managing various aspects of teachers and schools.
One of the key components of TMIS is the TMIS Returns, which involves the submission of important details related to schools, teachers, enrollment, and performance.
Let’s dive into the process of using TMIS Returns and how it streamlines the management of teacher information.
Getting Started with TMIS Returns
To begin the process, users need to access the TMIS Returns platform and click on the ‘Submit Teachers Returns’ option.
This action will open a new window where users can update the following details:

This includes information such as the school’s location, contact details, sponsorship, status, category, and attendance numbers.
Once updated, users can click on ‘SAVE’ to proceed.
- Ordinary Enrollment
Users are required to update the exact number of students in each age category and the number of instruction classes for each form or class.

- Teachers on Study Leave
Users can capture data of teachers pursuing studies by selecting a teacher from the list and entering the course pursued, start and end dates, study area, and training mode before clicking on ‘SAVE’.
- Subject Enrollment (CBE)
Users must enter the correct number of students per class, per gender, for all subjects offered and save the information.
- Non Full Teaching Load (Due to Illness)
Declaration of teachers with less workload than the recommended TSC’s number of lessons per week can be done by selecting a teacher from the list, choosing the reason for not having a full load, and clicking on ‘SAVE’.
- KCPE/KCSE Performance
This involves entering the respective teacher’s mean for all candidate classes subjects taught since 2015.
