26 Degree Courses Disqualified by TSC for PGDE Qualification
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) of Kenya was formed under Article 237(1) and (2) of the Constitution of Kenya (2010).
This vital organization is in charge of managing teachers all around the country.
The registration of competent and experienced teachers, a crucial part of maintaining the caliber of instruction in public and private schools, is one of its essential responsibilities.
Previously, earning a bachelor’s degree in the arts or sciences and then a postgraduate diploma in education (PGDE) were prerequisites for teaching in Kenya.
However, depending on the undergraduate degree chosen, particularly in the curriculum and subject matter content, the value of a PGDE qualification varies.
For TSC teacher registration via the PGDE route, candidates typically need a bachelor’s degree and a specialized PGDE in two teaching disciplines.
Applicants with academic backgrounds in disciplines not currently taught in the curriculum are not eligible to become teachers, regardless of whether they hold PGDE credentials or any other qualifications.
Courses Ineligible for PGDE Qualification
This criterion for exclusion has its roots in the alignment of subject matter with the level of competency needed for efficient instruction.
Only eligible courses frequently need to offer the thorough subject coverage necessary for teachers to do their jobs competently.
The main requirement for becoming eligible for a PGDE is having topic mastery in two teaching areas.
This prerequisite can only be achieved if the topic is wholly excluded from the curriculum or partially addressed within the courses.

- All Engineering-related Courses
- Industrial Chemistry
- Biochemistry
- Hospitality and Tourism
- Foods, Nutrition, and Dietetics
- Technology and Applied Biology
- Microbiology, and more.
It is significant to remember that although these programs do not currently meet the requirements for PGDE certification, they are nevertheless worthwhile academic fields in their own right.
Students who work in these sectors can contribute substantially to society and the workforce, albeit in ways other than typical teaching positions.
