TSC Updates Today on Recruitment: 6,000 Teachers to be Recruited, 36,000 to Benefit from Promotions
In a significant development, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced plans to recruit 6,000 more teachers and promote 36,000 existing teachers.
This move comes as a boon for many teachers who have long been stuck in the same job groups.
Key Points:
- Over 36,000 teachers were interviewed for the vacancies, many of whom have been in the same job groups for years.
- Applications for promotion were invited in August last year, with interviews conducted in December 2023 and January this year.
- Promoted teachers will receive higher pay.
Nancy Macharia, the CEO of TSC, stated that this week, thousands of teachers who attended promotion interviews will know their outcomes.
The interviews were held for positions in elementary, secondary, and teacher training colleges.
Ms. Macharia also mentioned that promoted teachers should start receiving their promotion letters this week, along with the associated benefits.
It was also revealed that the TSC had given millions of shillings to teachers who had resigned, as disclosed during an appearance before Parliament to address queries from the Auditor-General.
Additionally, Ms. Macharia announced plans to hire 20,000 teachers in the upcoming fiscal year.
She also mentioned that 46,000 teachers currently employed under contract will become permanent residents and be eligible for pensions after two years.
Collins Oyuu of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and Akello Misori of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) welcomed the announcement but emphasized that deserving teachers should receive promotions gradually.
The TSC’s move to recruit and promote teachers is a positive step towards addressing long-standing issues of stagnation and ensuring that teachers are appropriately recognized and rewarded for their contributions.
