The journey to becoming a teacher under the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) just got more defined with the release of new recruitment interview guidelines.

To pave your way into the teaching profession, here’s a comprehensive look at what you need to know about the TSC interview process.

1. Crucial Registration Requirement

First and foremost, all aspiring teachers must be duly registered, as mandated by Section 23(1) of the Teachers Service Commission Act, 2012.

This prerequisite is non-negotiable, and those who aren’t registered won’t be considered for the interview.

2. Verification is Key

TSC County Directors play a pivotal role in the process.

They must ensure that Heads of Institutions confirm the online registration status of applicants during the shortlisting stage.

This step is crucial to avoid engaging with unregistered or deregistered individuals.

3. Addressing Discrepancies

For applicants facing name discrepancies in academic and professional certificates or identification cards, presenting an Affidavit is a must.

This legal document, sworn under the Oaths and Statutory Declarations Act, Cap 15 of the Laws of Kenya, is necessary to explain any variances.

4. Dealing with Examination Retakes

Applicants who re-sat either KCPE or KCSE examinations must present certified copies of the relevant certificates.

These copies should be verified by Sub-County Directors to ensure their authenticity.

5. System-Driven Shortlisting

The TSC adopts a systematic approach to shortlisting.

System-generated Applicants’ Lists are utilized by the County Selection Panel to select five candidates for each post.

Pertinent details, including the shortlisted applicants, interview dates, and venues, are published on the TSC website.

Documents to Prepare for TSC Recruitment Interview

Upon receiving an interview invitation, applicants should gather the following documents:

  • National identification card
  • Certificate of Registration as a teacher
  • Evidence of service as a teacher intern (if applicable)
  • Diploma/Degree certificate and official transcripts
  • KCSE certificates (including certificates for attempts, if applicable)
  • KCPE certificate (including certificates for attempts, if applicable)
  • Primary and Secondary School leaving certificates and other relevant testimonials
  • National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) Card (if applicable)
  • An Affidavit to explain name variances
  • Letter of certification of results by KNEC (if applicable)

TSC Interview Guidelines

The interview process is designed to be fair and transparent:

  • Heads of Institutions conduct interviews for the five shortlisted applicants for each advertised post. In cases where fewer than five applicants are shortlisted, all of them undergo the interview.
  • The list of shortlisted candidates is published on the TSC website at least seven days before the interview date.
  • Equal treatment is guaranteed for all applicants, irrespective of gender, disability, ethnicity, or Home County.
  • The Commission reserves 5% of all advertised slots for the recruitment of teachers with disabilities, aligning with constitutional provisions.
  • Additional slots are allocated to schools in Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) and Hard-to-Staff areas based on recorded teacher shortages.

By adhering to these guidelines and preparing the necessary documents, aspiring teachers can navigate the TSC interview process confidently, increasing their chances of securing a coveted teaching position.

The TSC is committed to fostering diversity and inclusivity, ensuring that every qualified individual has an equal opportunity to contribute to the education sector.
