Unlocking the CBC Training: TSC Circular Unveils Schedule and Detail

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has rolled out a comprehensive plan for the training of Grade 7 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers in the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) and Competency Based Assessment (CBA).

The circular, dated October 2 to 13, 2023, lays out a strategic approach to retooling educators, ensuring a seamless transition to the CBC framework.

Smart Cascade Training Approach

The training paradigm adopts a smart cascade approach, dividing the process into three key stages:

  1. Master Trainers’ Session (October 2-4):
    • Location: Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE)
    • Participants: Drawn from TSC, KICD, KNEC, KEMI, CEMASTEA, MoE, KISE, and TTCs.
  2. Trainers of Trainers (TOTs) Training (October 6-7):
    • Location: Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) and County select sites
    • Participants: Recruited from CSOs, TTC Teacher Educators, MoE QAS, and TSC SCDs.
  3. Subject Clusters Retooling (October 9-13):
    • Location: TTCs and county-selected locations
    • Participants: Teachers specializing in languages, science, mathematics, humanities, and technical courses.

Capacity Enhancement Activities

To enhance teacher capacity, a series of activities will be carried out:

  • TOTs’ Responsibility:
    • Conduct face-to-face training for teachers over 5 days.
    • Master Trainers provide expert assistance during teacher training.

Residential and Non-Residential Aspects

The training exercise will be residential for Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL), including Mandera, Lamu, Wajir, Garissa, Tanariver, Isiolo, Marsabit, Samburu, Turkana, Marsabit, and West Pokot.

For non-ASAL regions, the training will be non-residential.

The venues for both categories will be TTCs and selected locations within the county.
