I. Teacher Internship Program Implementation

  • Appointment of supervisors and mentors for effective program implementation.
  • Assigning relevant work to assist interns in acquiring necessary skills.

II. Certificate of Completion and Record Maintenance

  • Issuance of a Certificate of Completion of Internship upon satisfactory program completion.
  • Maintenance of a record of all successfully completing teacher interns.

III. Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Role of a Supervisor
    • Create a conducive learning environment.
    • Assign duties to interns.
    • Appoint a mentor for each intern.
    • Oversee intern work performance.
    • Set performance targets and appraise interns.
    • Assist in program monitoring and evaluation.
    • Provide necessary resources and tools.
    • Report to the Commission on progress and challenges.
  2. Role of a Mentor Teacher
    • Orient intern to the school environment.
    • Develop work program for the intern.
    • Co-teach and conduct lesson demonstrations.
    • Provide emotional support and mentorship.
    • Ensure program implementation as stipulated.
    • Conduct ongoing monitoring and assessment.
  3. Broad Responsibilities of an Intern
    • Earn students’ respect and maintain professional relationships.
    • Familiarize with rules, regulations, and policies.
    • Actively participate in learning experiences.
    • Be punctual and dependable.
    • Apply acquired knowledge and skills.
    • Complete assignments and evaluations.
    • Attend school activities.
    • Maintain a logbook verified by the Supervisor.
    • Identify and set internship objectives.
    • Establish effective professional relationships.

IV. Selection Criteria and Placement Procedure

  1. Selection Criteria
    • Academic/professional qualifications.
    • Merit, integrity, gender, regional representation, disability status, and minority consideration.
  2. Selection Procedures
    • Competitive process through advertising.
    • Verification of academic and professional certificates.
    • Internship Agreement signing upon selection.

V. Principles of the Internship Programme

  1. Inclusivity and accessibility.
  2. Practical experience for professional development.
  3. Development of interpersonal skills.
  4. Prudent management of resources.
  5. Relevant training aligned with individual and institutional needs.

VI. Payment of Stipend, Entitlements, Insurance, and Other Requirements

  • Non-remunerative internship with a stipend determined by the Commission.
  • Statutory deductions (PAYE, NHIF).
  • Entitlements: One month sick leave and 15 days annual leave.
  • Personal Accident Insurance and NHIF registration.
  • Submission of required documents for confidentiality and safety.

VII. Discontinuation/Termination of Internship

  • Unsatisfactory performance or failure to conform to conduct standards may lead to termination.
  • Specific grounds for discontinuation listed.
  • Commission may terminate the contract with a 30-day notice.
  • Interns can resign with a 30-day notice or seek termination for employment elsewhere.

VIII. Variation

  • Commission may vary or terminate the program based on government policy, budget allocation, or fiscal measures.
